From Our Grant Recipients

Bill Nelson

Meet Bill Nelson, an Eye on Grace travel grant recipient.

Bill was diagnosed with uveal melanoma in February 2025 after a routine eye exam for new glasses. His optometrist found a growth and sent him to a specialist, then to Duke, where a biopsy confirmed uveal melanoma. For a year, his scans were clear – until February 2026, when doctors found cancer in his liver, left leg, and left hip. He’s now doing Hepzato treatment and traveling regularly for care.

Bill shared:

“It’s tough making plans because of the treatment, and I have good and bad days. But this cancer has brought my family together. My beautiful bride of 43 years – my high school sweetheart – and my daughter have been amazing. They research everything about this cancer and all the treatments available.

Our son is back in our lives after being estranged for four years. I told my bride, ‘Whatever it takes to get our family together again, so be it.’ So, God is good. Everyone has their own journey, and this is mine. I have a great life.

Eye on Grace has been a Godsend for me and everyone they help. They make it possible for people to receive care at places they otherwise couldn’t afford to access. God bless everyone at Eye on Grace and the generous donors for helping change people’s lives.”
