Steve Garza
The Eye on Grace Foundation has sponsored multiple trips in 2025 for Steve Garza, who was diagnosed with ocular melanoma after a routine eye exam. Steve travels from his home in San Antonio to Houston and Philadelphia for treatment. This is Steve’s story:
“The tumor in my left eye was discovered during a routine eye exam after dilation. I was referred to an ocular oncologist in Houston, as there isn’t one available in San Antonio. My wife and I had never heard of uveal melanoma, a rare and devastating diagnosis.
Two weeks later, I was in Houston, where the diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasound. Another two weeks after that, I underwent brachytherapy: seven days of radiation to the tumor, along with a biopsy. I later returned to have the radiation plaque removed.
When we received the biopsy results, we learned the tumor was aggressive, with a high risk of metastasis. I began a monitoring regimen: abdominal MRIs every three months and CT scans of my lungs every six months. Unfortunately, after eight months, I started experiencing pain in my right rib area. Further imaging and a biopsy confirmed that the melanoma had metastasized from my eye to my bone. This was devastating news for me and my family. I now have several cancer lesions and am awaiting treatment.
The Eye on Grace Foundation has been a true blessing to me and my loved ones. They’ve helped cover the costs of hotels, fuel, and even a flight to Philadelphia for a second opinion, support that has been vital in helping me make informed decisions about my care. This rare cancer requires frequent trips to Houston, over 300 miles away. Without the Foundation’s help, I wouldn’t be able to attend the essential appointments that sustain my survival.
To everyone who has supported the Eye on Grace Foundation, thank you. And to those considering a donation, please know that your gift is more than financial. It gives hope.
And hope is everything!”
