From Our Grant Recipients
Sharon Muzzy
It is 1,172-mile journey each way from Sharon Muzzy’s home in Oklahoma to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and she makes the trip monthly for Ocular Melanoma treatment. Hotels and flights were costing her about $1100 a month, plus food, Ubers, and other travel-related expenses.
Sharon says, “I can't begin to express how grateful I am for the Eye on Grace Foundation. They have literally stepped in and taken the burden of paying for my treatment-related travel, saying, ‘We'll take care of this, you take care of you.’
“Having a rare cancer is not a one-and-done situation ... especially when it metastasizes. You realize very quickly that while others with cancer get to "ring the bell," for you, that may never be an option. I went from being a perfectly healthy 59-year-old to losing sight in my eye, and then losing my eye itself, to having metastasis four months later. I was already reeling, trying to adjust to having a rare cancer and researching the very limited approved treatment options available to me, to then learning that it had already spread quite rapidly.
“I'd like to say a very grateful "thank you" from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for your donations and all you do to support this foundation. Sometimes, when you donate, you wonder if your money actually helps anyone. I can say with Eye on Grace, it is going to the recipients who need it so very much. Having a rare cancer means treatment isn't always available locally, and your donation is helping folks to do all they possibly can to save their own life. Thank you seems so small, but it is the only thing I have available, so I'd like to shout it from the rooftops ... THANK YOU!”
