From Our Grant Recipients

Mike Cornell

Mike was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma in 2017 after seeking treatment for what he thought was just a detached retina. Within days, he learned it was cancer. In October of 2023, he discovered it had metastasized to his liver. Since his cancer journey began, he’s been through a variety of treatments and therapies, clinical trials, and countless hospital trips.

“Through it all, my family has lived with this constant weight, never knowing when things might get very bad very quickly. My kids have spent nearly half their lives with me having this disease. My wife is slowly taking over everything I do for our household. None of this is fair, but this disease isn’t fair,” says Mike.

“That’s why the travel support from Eye on Grace has meant so much to us. I didn’t expect to feel such a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. For my current trial, I drive nearly four hours each way from Columbus to Pittsburgh. Knowing my hotel and fuel are covered means those dollars can go back into my family, and into making memories while I still have time.

“My trips aren’t expensive, but $250–$300 each visit adds up fast. Eye on Grace steps in so patients like me don’t have to choose between pursuing treatment or paying bills. It also gives me confidence that if I need to change treatments or centers again, some of that cost can be defrayed. That’s a tremendous benefit, and I’m incredibly grateful.

“I hope that potential donors understand that this disease requires travel unless you happen to live near a specialist. Just helping with gas and a hotel can be the difference between a patient joining a trial or staying home. Support from Eye on Grace helps us access the care we need, live longer, and advance research for everyone facing Ocular Melanoma. Your gift truly helps us keep going.”
